I will always be a mare person. All my horses have been mares, but I have ridden a lot of geldings and they've never been as sharp as mares in my
experience. I think that if you treat them well they will try harder for you. I really believe if you find a good mare you have the best horse of all.

You know I have only had to train mares.. including Bailey.. Chuck was 4.5 years old when I bought him and well broke as broke could be.. As for teaching new
stuff, him was good but I can't really compare as it was totally different as I didn't know anything, so as I learned to ride better I experimented
with things and he picked it up.. Now he is pretty much push button..lol.. And of course now I can't keep teaching more as he is broken .. I think??

We have 2 geldings and a mare-- and we both swear the mare is "smarter" -- or more aware-- or whatever. |

Intelligence goes to each individual horse. You can't say "mares are more intelligent" cause that's a blanket statement, and wont hold water.
Some mares are dumber than a box of rocks. It all goes to their breeding. You can't take a couple of mental midgets and expect an intelligent horse from
that cross.
Same goes with geldings. One cannot say that all geldings are more intelligent than mares or stallions. And the same, naturally, goes with stallions. If you want intelligence, you breed for it. Oh sure, all horses have some intelligence, but if you're talking an outstanding individual, you have to breed for it. |

I've only had one gelding...never got to ride him but I did all the green breaking. He was a great horse to be around!
With that in mind, I can't say which is 'smarter'...not only does breeding have to do with it, but also the relationship you have with the horse. ![]() Some days life doesn't get any better than this! |

I hear people say all the time that mares are sensitive and bitchy. I think that is just stupid. You can use the same methods and get the same results on mares
and geldings. I do think that some people get along with one sex or the other better, but its not the horse, its the person.

I guess maybe that makes sense.. It all depends on the horse and maybe the person who is doing the training??? |

KG349 wrote: I very much agree with this statement. I have had both mares and geldings over the yrs and neither was smarter than the other. Each horse was very different and each learned in their own way and
own time but none of them were stupid. My geldings were all more goofy than the mares though. The mares were more lets get to work and get it done. The
geldings were and are just big goof balls!
